Henry Campbell was killed in on 23rd February, 1915 while serving with the 1st Argylle & Sutherland Highlanders battalion of 81 Brigade, 27th Division, but as yet there is no further information concerning his death. The 1st Argylle & Sutherland Highlanders battalion had been in India at the start of the war in August 1914 but soon returned to England to join 27th Division which went to France at the end of December, 1914 and then moved to the line to the south of Ypres. The attrition rate among British soldiers on the Western Front was on average 300 each day and 60% of these were as a result of shellfire. When not involved in an actual battle it was either shell fire or a sniper’s bullet that caused most deaths and injuries. |
